Arts & Clubs

Mr. Curtis teaches guitar to 6th graders and experienced 5th graders with a sincere interest in learning to play the guitar.

Having your own guitar is not necessary, but is recommended to progress.

There is no cost.

The highlight of our science fair is the annual science day. Our school science committee plans a fantastic day of science presentations and demonstrations to engage our students in science learning. These presentations give our students a chance to meet real people in science careers. With the science fair coming up, we hope that science day will inspire our students to participate fully in this learning experience. Support from parents is important for student participation in the science fair.

Butterfield students in grades 4-6 are invited to join Bobcat Chorus. We meet once a week after school to rehearse fun and challenging music to be performed at school and community events. We learn how to use our voices and music literacy. Choreography and drama enhance some of our songs. Students are asked to pay a nominal fee to cover the cost of music and a tee-shirt. In the past, we have been invited to perform at the State Music Teachers’ Conference, a National Music Conference and many local events. We will, also, have school scheduled performances as well. The culmination of the year will be a ½ day trip, while performing, and ending with a pizza party. The average membership is from 40-60 members.

The students that make up Butterfield’s Student Council work hard to lead our school with their positive example.  Any student in 4th-6th grade is able to run for an officer position, and each 3rd-6th grade class has a classroom representative.  This group of hard working students are responsible for Friday Assemblies, Butterfield’s Recycling Program, running the School Store, supporting character building activities such as Red Ribbon Week, funding various items that benefit students, as well as acting as liaisons for Butterfield at numerous events.

Homework and Tutoring Club is for students who may need a quiet place or assistance doing their homework.  This club is by grade level and is limited in size.  Contact the school if you are interested in this service.  This service is supported by tax credit contributions.

K-Kids is a student-led organization that teaches leadership through serving others. The students promise to serve their neighborhood and at Butterfield. The goal is to show respect toward the environment and to try to make the world a better place to live. Our K-Kids have achieved this goal by planning and carrying out several service projects. We collected food at Thanksgiving and Christmas for the Marana Food Bank. We collected toys for Toys for Tots. We collected pennies (and all other coins) for the Leukemia and Lymphoma Society. This is our Pennies for Pasta drive in the spring.  All of the collections benefit children and families in our school district and southern Arizona community. The K-Kids organization takes care of the Lost and Found at our school and has held many campus clean-up activities.  K-Kids membership is open to any student who desires to become a leader in our school and community, and wishes to provide service to others.

Mighty Milers is an incentive walking/running program for 1-6 grade.

Kinders can participate after the Walk-Off during October.

The lower playground is set up that if you walk one lap it is one quarter of a mile. Every four laps is one mile. Grade levels can compete against grade level or class against class. The hardest part is finding volunteers to keep the miles up to date. Miles need to be manually placed into a computer.
This year one of our wellness goals is to get the program to be during and before school. This will take volunteers. The goal would be at 7:25 am the kids could run/walk their laps if they want to participate.

The Butterfield STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering, and Math) Club is sponsored, in partnership, by Butterfield teachers and Pima Community College science professors.

The club meets bimonthly. The Pima Community College professors allow the Butterfield students to use college equipment and materials. Some of the lab activities from last year were dissecting owl pellets, analyzing animal skulls, preparing slides with pond scum and viewing microscopic creatures, and studying the effect of sunscreen on solar sensitive beads.

The year culminated with a field trip to Pima Community College to visit science classrooms and labs. The science department chairs and professors, along with many community volunteers, led the students in many hands-on activities.
